Saifedean Ammous

Bitcoin as sound money; stock-to-flow; digital realisation of Mengerian monetary tradition.

Short History

A contemporary economist and author whose work popularized an Austrian account of Bitcoin as hard money for a digital age.

Praxeology

Ammous applies Austrian monetary theory to modern fiat systems and to Bitcoin’s fixed-supply, settlement-oriented design.

Why this matters to Praxeos

Praxeos uses his work as a modern bridge between Mengerian monetary emergence, Misesian calculation, and Bitcoin-era sound-money debates.

Saifedean Ammous is the principal contemporary Austrian monetary theorist to engage Bitcoin as money rather than as investment. The Bitcoin Standard (2018) places the digital asset within the same monetary tradition as Menger's origin-of-money account and Mises's regression theorem: a commodity money emerges as the most saleable good in a network, its value grounded in non-monetary prior demand, its supply governed by conditions that resist arbitrary expansion.

Ammous's technical contribution is the stock-to-flow ratio as the key measure of monetary hardness. A money's hardness is the ratio of existing supply (stock) to annual production (flow). Gold's stock-to-flow of roughly 62 — it would take 62 years of current mining output to double the existing stock — is the highest of any pre-Bitcoin money, and the principal reason gold served as monetary anchor across four millennia. Bitcoin's stock-to-flow rises toward infinity as the block subsidy halves, the supply schedule is cryptographically fixed, and the protocol's mining-cost mechanism couples issuance to consensus rather than to arbitrary issuance by any authority.

The Fiat Standard (2021) is the companion volume, extending the analytical apparatus to the twentieth-century fiat monetary regime and its consequences for time preference, capital structure, and the cost of living.

halving-garden is Ammous's argument made visceral: the visible fixed schedule, the four halving seasons, the ambient M2-vs.-BTC-issuance meter. Further elaborations are planned in the sound-money module.
