Carl Menger
Founded the Austrian school. Subjective theory of value; origin of money.
Short History
An Austrian economist whose 1871 Principles of Economics helped launch the marginal revolution and gave the Austrian school its subjectivist starting point.
Praxeology
Menger put individual valuation, marginal utility, and causal-realistic analysis at the center of economics, preparing the ground for later praxeological method.
Why this matters to Praxeos
Praxeos begins with acting persons, not aggregates. Menger supplies the site’s treatment of subjective value, spontaneous monetary emergence, and goods ordered by human plans.

Carl Menger founded the Austrian school in 1871 with Grundsätze der Volkswirthschaftslehre — Principles of Economics — one of the three simultaneous marginalist revolutions (alongside Jevons in England and Walras in Switzerland). Menger's contribution was to locate economic value in subjective individual valuation, not in objective labour cost, land rent, or the cost of production.
From this premise everything else unfolds. Prices are not measures of intrinsic worth but artifacts of preference rankings meeting at exchange. Demand arises not from mean utility but from the utility of the last unit available to a given valuer — the marginal unit. This insight dissolved the diamond-water paradox that had troubled political economy since the eighteenth century and set the course of modern price theory.
Menger's second great contribution was On the Origins of Money (1892), which accounted for money's emergence as a spontaneous-order phenomenon. The most saleable commodity in a barter network — typically one with favourable divisibility, durability, and recognisability — is accepted first as a medium of exchange by a handful of participants; its acceptability begets further acceptability; the process converges on a universal medium without any central decree. Mises's regression theorem of 1912 built directly on this.

In Praxeos
Menger is the first thinker the project engages. His subjective-value principle is the premise of every pricing interactive; his origin-of-money theory anchors halving-garden and the planned menger-origin-of-money module.
